Media Committee February Update

The Media Committee is planning another Corps Day video workshop at SPNN, to take place on April 20th. CTEP members will have an opportunity to tackle a fun small-group video project that will allow us all to exercise our storyboard, scripting, camera, and editing skills once again. Weather permitting, we'll have the opportunity to go outside to do some of our video shooting.

The Media Committee is currently working on finding the best way to provide every CTEP member with a copy of a DVD containing all the PSA projects that we worked on at the Corps Day video workshop we did back in December. More info on that coming soon!

Media Committee members are available for information / consultation / help with video productions or other media projects you may be planning at your sites. Consider us to be an information resource for your media work, and feel free to email us with any questions or to ask for training, resources, or other help, and we'll give you as much information and assistance as we can.

Recently, Gina and Les videotaped a class conducted by Bridget for the Laptops for Learning program at Waite House, as well as interviews that Bridget conducted after class with program participants. Bridget and Gina edited the video in iMovie (on a long, long Sunday afternoon / evening / wee hours), and the finished video was presented at the Laptops for Learning graduation ceremony on January 22nd. The video was a hit, says Bridget -- people laughed in the right places. Bridget and Gina are planning to create an addition to the video in the near future, and the finished product will be utilized by the Laptops for Learning program as a tool for publicizing the program.

Brainstorming for the media production committee during our first Corps day yielded these results:

Goals

Create media to educate, inform or promote programs/ideas in the community
Set up more media access labs in other tech centers, i.e. video/photo/graphics
Facilitate other CTEP members in learning media production so they can bring this info back to their sites. Also so we can each increase our own tech/media literacy
Develop training for non-profit organizations so they can create their own PSAs and promotional media
Technological literacy programs

Activities

Collaborate with other committees on production and/or placement of material
Create categorized list (immigration, job skills, etc.) of public media resources available
Visual media materials on regulations as well as informative resources (video) to outreach to community awareness
traveling media classes in other tech centers (photo club?)

An update re: Google Video:

There is no longer a (multiple hour or day) waiting period for publishing videos to the web with Google Video. An uploaded video is now live on the internet within minutes. Enjoy!

Note: You still must have a (free) Google (Gmail.com) account to upload videos. If you don't have an account, find a friend or acquaintance who does, and ask him or her to invite you to join Gmail (by sending an invitation to your current e-mail address). It's quick and easy!

What else is new?

The Media Committee presented its second Corps Day training this past Friday (July 7). This training was about the power of youth media. Rox did a quick intro and talked about the importance of youth created media (why it’s good). Kevin wasn’t able to be there, but he contributed an awesome video that included clips of him and a co-worker at SPNN describing their roles in youth media and why they believe that youth media is important. Also, it includes interviews with youth involved in the Set It Up program at SPNN re: their feelings about the importance of youth media and why it’s better to actively create media than to passively consume it.

Dave presented some information about the negative impact that passive consumption of media has on youth (and adults for that matter).

I gave a presentation about the negative stereotypes about youth that are perpetuated in the media, and why it’s important (for that reason) for youth to take control of media and present their own images of themselves.

A significant part of our presentation consisted of watching an hour + compilation of youth media by the Twin Cities Youth Media Network. The videos were all created by youth and ranged from mini-documentaries about violence in Minneapolis to music videos to stop-motion animation to just-about-anything-you-can-imagine. I think it was a good way to illustrate the variety of voices that youth have and how those voices undermine misconceptions that many adults have about young people.

An Excruciatingly Hip Entry

Not too much to report today. Dave and I met briefly at Corps Day to touch base about the CTEP Profile video project. We also talked about the brief update that I would present to the rest of our Corps later in the day.

Our main projects currently are
1. The CTEP Profile video project
2. Committee Corps Day presentation on Youth Media

A side project that some Corps members have expressed interest in is the media committee providing assistance in learning to upload videos to the web and then embedding them on blogs or websites. So, if any other committees or Corps members are interested in learning this process, send Kevin or me and e-mail and we can provide some tips.

That’s all for now. Hopefully the next update will be a bit more exciting.

I'm testing YouTube as an alternative for uploading videos to the web. So far an advantage is that videos don't have to be "verified" (you don't have to wait a few hours to a few days) for them to be live on the internet. I uploaded a video in minutes.

My cousins and I made this particular video during a heatwave in Boston, August 2001.

During committee time at our Corps Day today, Riley and I decided to break the rules in the Skyline Computer Lab. Shot and edited in under 30 minutes, this excercise in digital storytelling demonstrates how quickly and easily one can create media and distribute it on the web.

May 3 Committee Meeting

At our committee meeting yesterday, we discussed two agenda items:
1. The CTEP profile video, and
2. Our Corps Day presentation about youth media.

We are still trying to arrange interview times/days for the CTEP profile video. It’s been a little difficult to coordinate everyone’s schedules. Following our meeting, I emailed the draft of our current interview questions to the other committee members. The questions will undergo revisions, and we’ll hopefully be able to begin conducting interviews by the end of this week or early next week.

We watched samples of youth media that we plan to incorporate into our presentation. We also talked a bit about how the presentation might unfold and brainstormed a few questions to ask youth involved in creating media and questions to ask adults who work with the youth who create media. We’re thinking that a portion of our presentation will include some of the filmed responses to these questions.

A final note: As you can see, we’ve begun using Google Video fairly regularly to upload videos to the web. It works great, but the length of time between the video being uploaded and going live can be anywhere from a few hours to a few days. We might be investigating alternatives for uploading videos to the web so our video posts may be more frequent.

April 21 Committee Meeting

So those were the agenda items; here's what we actually did:

We discussed possible questions (and revisions to questions) for the CTEP profile video. Included in this discussion was some talk of what our statement of purpose for the video will be.

We also talked about the desire to use our vlog more regularly. In an effort to put words to action, we filmed Kevin's brief introduction to our agenda items, and then posted the video using Google Video. Now all of our committee members are familiar with this process and will be able to post video regularly.
